David L. Anderson
Discover more than 200 waterfalls throughout Oregon and Washington’s most scenic, unique, and diverse landscapes.
Overview chapters on Pacific Northwest climate, geology, photography, and basic hiking tips prepare readers for their treks to the falls, while each of the falls’ descriptions includes directions for how to get there; the USGS topographic map quad; hike distance; falls’ source, height, and volume; and suggestions for the best time of year to visit. Regional maps showing the locations of each of the falls are also included. Distances range from easy walks of a few hundred yards to strenuous 10-mile hikes, to accommodate any level of hiking ability.

Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest:
Timber Press Field Guide
Steve Trudell and Joe Ammirati
This compact, beautifully illustrated guide presents descriptions and photographs of 460 of the region’s most conspicuous, distinctive, and ecologically important mushrooms. The geographic range covered by the book includes Oregon, Washington, southern British Columbia, Idaho, and westernmost Montana, with an emphasis on the heart of mushroom country: the low- to mid-elevation forest habitats of western Oregon and Washington. In addition to profiles on individual species, Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest also includes a general discussion and definition of fungi; information on where to find mushrooms and guidelines on collecting them; an overview of fungus ecology; and a discussion on mushroom poisoning and how to avoid it.

A SUPREMELY BAD IDEA: THREE MAD BIRDERS AND THEIR QUEST TO SEE IT ALL is cleverly written and is a fun read even if you have no interest in birds. Besides, there’s something about the bird on the cover that dares you just to open it up.

A Supremely Bad Idea

A Supremely Bad Idea: Three Mad Birders and Their Quest to See It All
Luke Dempsey
It began innocently enough, when two eccentric guests at Luke Dempsey’s weekend home pointed out a small bird flitting through his garden. Dempsey, entranced, found himself falling head over heels. Before he knew it, he and his friends were off on an epic birding journey down the backroads of America, in search of the country’s rarest and most beautiful birds. A Supremely Bad Idea is the hilarious story of their trip.

Brian’s notes:

The other one I’ve just started is WISDOM OF THE LAST FARMER: HARVESTING LEGACIES FROM THE LAND. This one I picked up and started reading a passage at random. And then had to keep reading to the end of the chapter. This one is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been a farmer, who has ever attempted to live by their values, or who has ever eaten a perfect peach.

Wisdom of the Last Farmer

Wisdom of the Last Farmer: Harvesting Legacies from the Land
David Mas Masumoto
In his gorgeous, lyrical prose, Masumoto conjures the realities of farming life while weaving in the history of American agriculture over the past century, encapsulating universal themes of work along with wisdom that could be gleaned only from the earth. By the end of the workday, he understands the feeling of accomplishment when you’ve done your best…and discovers that it’s when he lets go – of both his father and control of nature – that wisdom manifests itself. And, when Masumoto’s daughter intends to return to the family farm, hope is found in the generations. In the quiet eloquence of WISDOM OF THE LAST FARMER, you will see how your own destiny is involved in the future of your food, the land, and the farm.
Masumoto – an organic farmer working the land in California’s Central Valley – farms stories as he farms peaches. In this impassioned memoir of revitalization and redemption, he finds the natural connections between generation and succession, fathers and children, booms and declines as he tells the story of his family and their farm.

In a few recent conversations at Incahoots, we discussed some of our favorite things about the fall season.

Natalie

Natalie likes the comforting feeling of a warm drink on a chilly day. She pointed out that we have a plethora of tea pots and cute mugs that make that drink even more special. She loves the fall colors and enjoys smelling all the new fall Yankee Candle scents. She looks forward to the excitement of unpacking the new merchandise and being the first to see what has arrived.

Dianne

Dianne loves the colors of fall – the reds, oranges and yellows of the potted mums, the assortment of cut flowers and foliage, and the beautiful fall wreaths that adorn almost every wall at the store. She also enjoys the feeling of fall. There is excitement in the air and the holidays are just around the corner!

Janet

Janet can hardy resist a nice scarf and keeps us well stocked with a variety of beautiful scarves. They are perfect for snuggling into on a cool autumn day. She also loves fall gardening and the promise of winter veggies in the garden.

Brian

Brian enjoys a nice cup of hot tea on a cool crisp day. He can usually be found drinking Assam Breakfast, All Day Breakfast or Ceylon Breakfast, but he also looks forward to trying the new teas that come in. New teas this fall include a new selection of reds and some chocolate teas. Of these, the Coconut Cocoa is his favorite.

Miranda

Miranda had only one thing to say when asked her favorite thing about the fall: Halloween! She’s been planning her costume for some time now! We have a spooktacular collection of Halloween decor here at the store including jewelry, candles with frightful scents, candle holders, signs, recipe books and more.

Marcel

Marcel did not hesitate when picking his favorite thing about fall, he knew right away: Yankee Candles! The fall scents are some of his favorites. He loves Pumpkin Pie, Harvest, Autumn Leaves, Spiced Pumpkin and Cranberry Chutney. He also likes to wear scarves and reportedly has a briefcase full of them at home.

Alena

Alena loves curling up with a good book and planning her next outdoor adventure. She can commonly be found with a hiking book in her possession and Incahoots always has several good ones to choose from. She also enjoys journaling and can quickly fill pages with her thoughts and ideas. She has already inspected the vast selection found a the store. They are all so nice, it’s hard to choose a favorite! `AW

Notes from the land of Incahoots

Sounds of the Season

The leaves have fallen, the air is chilly and the town is luminous with the glow of countless strings of lights strung from the eaves, woven through the trees and tossed over the shrubery. All of which can only mean that Christmas is not far away. Time to pull out your favorite holiday CD’s, give them a spin, and settle in for an evening of decorating and sipping hot chocolate.

What’s that you say? You’ve grown tired of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer as sung by the Judges of America’s Got Talent? Never fear, Incahoots is here with some inspiring new tunes for your holiday reveling.

First up, the brilliant new album by Sarah Brightman – A WINTER SYMPHONY. Sarah is equally at home in both the Operatic and Pop vocal styles, which is like getting two singers for the price of one. This CD offers a refreshing mix of a few traditional Christmas favorites and some not so familiar pieces. The arrangements are delightfully dramatic and a tad epic with rock-tinged orchestral instrumentation as a backdrop. A particular favorite is the closing piece – I Believe in Father Christmas, originally done by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. (I actually have their original on vinyl, which should give you an idea of just how long I’ve had excellent musical tastes.)

Loreena McKennitt’s 1995 EP A WINTER’S GARDEN marked her first release to feature traditional holiday music. A MIDWINTER NIGHT’S DREAM features the original five songs of A WINTER’S GARDEN alongside eight brand new recordings all performed with her characteristic medieval/Celtic blend.

Enya fans are rejoicing this year as she has finally released a full length holiday CD – AND WINTER CAME. This isn’t an album destined to be confined to the Christmas season however. Aside from two holiday classics, the music has more in common with the music of Enya’s proper albums, only centered on the theme of winter. A mix of lightly rhythmic songs and heartfelt ballads that show the beauty of Enya’s timeless voice.

And finally, just in time for Christmas, Andrea Bocelli has released a CD that surprisingly doesn’t have Christmas tunes on it. INCANTO takes a romantic, nostalgic trip back to the Naples of the 1950s with this album of melodic serenades from the grand tenor. The album marks a return to the more operatic style of album that punctuated his earlier career, including songs that tie closely to Italian classical traditions. From the grandiose orchestration and mandolins of the joyous “Funiculi Funicula” to the wistful elegance of “Santa Lucia” to the Italian tarantella “Pulcinella,” INCANTO revels in the dreamy beauty often synonymous with the sounds of Italy.

You’ll find these and dozens of other glorious holiday CDs here at Incahoots – your source for the finest in holiday living.

Notes from the land of Incahoots

The Walls are Alive!

In the blog a few weeks ago, I mentioned that I was going to take a ‘Living Walls’ class at the Oregon Garden in Silverton. What got me interested in living walls was that while Janet, Miranda and I were at Da Vinci Days in Corvallis in July, we came across a ‘Living Wall’ display. Basically, it’s a method of growing plants in a vertical structure that holds potting mix. As chance would have it, Chemeketa Community College offered a class devoted to just this subject. So the last Saturday in September I went to the Oregon Garden to spend the day learning about how to make living walls (and green roofs) and also get some hands-on experience as we created one for the garden. (Don’t you love classes where you get to pay to work?) A living wall may be just the thing for the south side of the Incahoots building. It would keep it cooler in the summer and definitely be more attractive. (Maybe I’ll teach a class next spring and you can pay me to build one.)

The design and construction techniques that we used for the wall at the garden were quite different from what we had seen at Da Vinci Days – somewhat of a cross between the low tech, do-it-yourself version and the buy and install, high tech types that are becoming more common. Many of the projects at the garden are experimental in nature and it will be interesting to see how this wall will change over time. I came to conclude that this is an area that is still in the early stages of experimentation and commercialization, and there are no right and wrong ways of constructing a living wall. That being said, here’s how we did the one at the Oregon Garden. The next time you’re there, be sure to stop by the Children’s Garden and see how it’s growing.

We began with custom-made wire cages which had a hinged center panel.

A coir (coconut fiber) blanket was used as the lining to contain the potting mix.

The potting mix was then packed into the cage and the coir was overlapped at the edges. This was the most time consuming part – trying to make sure that the mix didn’t get out and not having a lot of room to tuck in the edges of the coir.

Next the center panel was tied back into place and slits were cut in to coir to make room for the plants.

The finished wall will feature a butterfly design created from various colors of plant foliage, so we worked from a master drawing being careful to put the right plant in the right place.

After the plants were tucked in, the cage was watered and hung on the grid. Drip tubing will be added to keep the wall well watered.

We didn’t have time to complete the whole wall during the class, but our instructor told us that there are a lot of volunteers at the garden who would be finishing it up. So I plan to go back this weekend and see how it’s coming along. This weekend it’s also time for the Garden’s annual Fall Festival -a fun family event in a gorgeous setting- and the weather is supposed to be sunny and warm. Perhaps I’ll see you there!

Peace,
