Ideas for fall and winter container gardnes.

winter container garden

We usually think of container gardens during the spring and summer months, but fall and winter plants also offer an abundant array of color and texture for focal points in containers as well.
To keep your containers looking fresh and eye-catching, it helps to change them seasonally so plants are at their best.
The first step in putting together your creation is selecting a container. Just about anything that will hold soil and has provision for drainage will do. Terra-cotta pots, stoneware, homemade wooden boxes, old shoes, use your imagination. If you are reusing a container it should first be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water.
When considering plant choices for fall and winter containers, keep in mind that flowers are sometimes at a minimum, so focus on foliage and berry color, architectural form and silhouette value. For instance, a dramatic combination with no actual flowers could be…

Red Twig Dogwood (tall red twigs)
Bergenia (large leaves turn red in winter)
Swiss Chard ‘Bright Lights’ (brightly colored stems of yellow, orange, pink, crimson, or purple)
Gaultheria (evergreen foliage with bright red berries)
Ornamental Kale (ruffly texture in purple or white leaves)
Pieris Japonica (variegated foliage and small flower buds)

To really distinguish your planting, consider adding a bit of art or whimsy to the design. Many garden accessories work equally well in containers and with the current popularity of gardening and nature, they’re not hard to find. Gigantic metal dragonflies, insect theme votive candle holders, and inspirational garden plaques are all easy to poke in. For a more natural look, don’t overlook the impact of twigs. Just a few curly willow, dogwood or birch stems can dramatically change the look of your container.

Annual Color

Pansies and Violas
Ornamental Kale and Cabbage
Swiss Chard
Cyclamen
Chrysanthemums

Rosemary
Wintergreen (evergreen foliage, red berries)
Rubus – Creeping Raspberry

A SUPREMELY BAD IDEA: THREE MAD BIRDERS AND THEIR QUEST TO SEE IT ALL is cleverly written and is a fun read even if you have no interest in birds. Besides, there’s something about the bird on the cover that dares you just to open it up.

A Supremely Bad Idea

A Supremely Bad Idea: Three Mad Birders and Their Quest to See It All
Luke Dempsey
It began innocently enough, when two eccentric guests at Luke Dempsey’s weekend home pointed out a small bird flitting through his garden. Dempsey, entranced, found himself falling head over heels. Before he knew it, he and his friends were off on an epic birding journey down the backroads of America, in search of the country’s rarest and most beautiful birds. A Supremely Bad Idea is the hilarious story of their trip.

Brian’s notes:

The other one I’ve just started is WISDOM OF THE LAST FARMER: HARVESTING LEGACIES FROM THE LAND. This one I picked up and started reading a passage at random. And then had to keep reading to the end of the chapter. This one is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been a farmer, who has ever attempted to live by their values, or who has ever eaten a perfect peach.

Wisdom of the Last Farmer

Wisdom of the Last Farmer: Harvesting Legacies from the Land
David Mas Masumoto
In his gorgeous, lyrical prose, Masumoto conjures the realities of farming life while weaving in the history of American agriculture over the past century, encapsulating universal themes of work along with wisdom that could be gleaned only from the earth. By the end of the workday, he understands the feeling of accomplishment when you’ve done your best…and discovers that it’s when he lets go – of both his father and control of nature – that wisdom manifests itself. And, when Masumoto’s daughter intends to return to the family farm, hope is found in the generations. In the quiet eloquence of WISDOM OF THE LAST FARMER, you will see how your own destiny is involved in the future of your food, the land, and the farm.
Masumoto – an organic farmer working the land in California’s Central Valley – farms stories as he farms peaches. In this impassioned memoir of revitalization and redemption, he finds the natural connections between generation and succession, fathers and children, booms and declines as he tells the story of his family and their farm.

Natalie

Natalie likes the comforting feeling of a warm drink on a chilly day. She pointed out that we have a plethora of tea pots and cute mugs that make that drink even more special. She loves the fall colors and enjoys smelling all the new fall Yankee Candle scents. She looks forward to the excitement of unpacking the new merchandise and being the first to see what has arrived.

Dianne

Dianne loves the colors of fall – the reds, oranges and yellows of the potted mums, the assortment of cut flowers and foliage, and the beautiful fall wreaths that adorn almost every wall at the store. She also enjoys the feeling of fall. There is excitement in the air and the holidays are just around the corner!

Janet

Janet can hardy resist a nice scarf and keeps us well stocked with a variety of beautiful scarves. They are perfect for snuggling into on a cool autumn day. She also loves fall gardening and the promise of winter veggies in the garden.

Brian

Brian enjoys a nice cup of hot tea on a cool crisp day. He can usually be found drinking Assam Breakfast, All Day Breakfast or Ceylon Breakfast, but he also looks forward to trying the new teas that come in. New teas this fall include a new selection of reds and some chocolate teas. Of these, the Coconut Cocoa is his favorite.
