It’s week 2 of International Chai Month (yes, I made that up) and let’s continue with a review of the next in our selection of spicy brews – Red Bush Chai.

Red Bush Chai is a caffeine-free blend of South African Rooibos and uplifting spices. Rooibos (easily pronounced ‘Roy-Boss’), is a member of the legume family of plants. It grows exclusively in the Cederberg Mountains and around Clanwilliam in South Africa. Early each year (January through March), the leaves of the Rooibos bush are harvested, bruised, finely chopped, moistened, and fermented in mounds. The result is a rich flavor and distinct, thin, red-colored leaves.

We source our Red Bush Chai from the Tao of Tea in Portland where they hand blend organic Rooibos with organic spices (cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and spearmint) to create a full-bodied, slightly spicy, cooling and sweet flavor.

Rooibos works well as a alternative to black tea and you can find it used as a base for a variety of tea blends. And since it’s naturally caffeine-free, it’s perfect for any time of day or night.
